The Torrey family, owners and operators of Basin Sports since 1991, are determined to continue providing an unmatched experience, both in the store and on the slopes. In the winter we ski daily and constantly testing new gear, sampling the conditions, and sniffing out powder stashes. Feel free to ask us any questions that you may have, we love to talk about skiing, snowboarding, cycling, hiking, bootcamp and even snowshoeing. www.basinski.com
This winter continues to provide lots of great skiing with a variety of conditions on different days. After a couple of warm days last week, Killington had a fun winter storm on Friday, leading to great powder days on Friday and Saturday. Temperatures have stayed below freezing since, making for good winter ski conditions. Today is a beautiful sunny day with temps in the high 20’s. The next couple of days look sunny and warmer each day. The snow should soften nicely.
I will have to admit that I ventured over to Outer Limits on Monday thinking it might have softened in the sun, but I was wrong. It hadn’t been groomed and was still firm. Today was soft on Wildfire and Bear Claw, particularly the lower sections. Pretty much anywhere that was groomed or had snow deposited by the wind over the weekend has pretty good packed powder conditions. The woods and natural snow trails are still skiing well, with a little bit of scratchiness. The groomers are good, with again an occasional scratchy spot.
Killington has made an amazing amount of snow on Superstar and the spine of snow can be seen from fairly far away. Hopefully we will have a nice long spring with a couple more months of skiing this year!
This has been one of those winters where if you don’t like the weather, just wait a day. I think we’ve had a bit of everything and then we’ve had more of everything. There have been many great powder days, some cold days, some sunny days and even some of those days with spring like conditions as well as a few, only a few, of those unmentionable conditions. Luckily there has been plenty of natural snow, providing a good base everywhere and cold temperatures for excellent machine made snow. This past weekend had new snow made on Outer Limits, among other trails, on Saturday and beautiful sunny skies on Sunday. Today was on the chilly side, with a bit of wind and gorgeous sunny skies. There was enough new natural snow last week as well as an additional 4-6 inches yesterday to provide fun woods and natural snow skiing. The groomed trails were also all in good shape, with an occasional scratchy spot where the wind had hit. Good natural snow was found on Snowdon off the 6 pack bubble chair, off the new Southridge chair, Skye Peak, K1 and Superstar. Cascade, Downdraft, Superstar, Wildfire, Needles Eye, Bunny Buster, to name a few, all provided good groomed skiing. Looks like another storm is headed our way Wednesday evening bringing more snow to the area!
A fun day skiing today with sunny skis and comfortable temps. The groomers are all in great shape and there are many to choose from. I recommend sticking to the edges late in the day as the middle of the trails do get a bit scraped and there is plenty of snow pushed to the sides. Many ungroomed trails were open with mixed views on their conditions. The ones in the sun – Royal Flush and even Roundabout were soft with the sunshine. Others such as Flume, stayed pretty firm all day. There were many pleasant surprises such as the edge of Skye Hawk and some of the trees where there was s bit of blown in snow. It looks like we have a warm, wet day tomorrow and then it will turn colder again and the snowmakers will be out in full force for the holidays. With 2 gondolas and the new Snowdon 6 Express Bubble Chair there are plenty of lifts to keep you comfortable when nature isn’t as cooperative. So, dress for the weather and enjoy the varied terrain Killington has to offer.
What a fabulous early season we are having. Yesterday was cold which made the debut of the new Snowdon Express Chair – the 6 pack bubble – perfectly timed and a welcome addition to the mountain. All except your feet are out of the elements and toasty warm on the quick ride up. The new snow on Thurs. night has reopened the off piste terrain, so lots of natural snow and woods trails are skiing well along with the groomers, so there is plenty of great skiing no matter what your favorite terrain is. Today was so beautiful I didn’t want it to end, so I hiked to the top for my last run and I met up with some other happy skiers.
Another great day of early season skiing yesterday. I’ll have to admit we were all pretty spoiled with our amazing post-Thanksgiving snowfall and tremendous skiing. Better than I can remember – ever – in November. The good news is that it is only early December and we have a lot of skiing available and great coverage. Killington continues to get flurries each day/night and it is starting to add up, with Killington reporting 5 inches over night. Killington had been making snow on Needles Eye the past few days and today the chair and terrain was reopened. More lifts are expected to open this weekend, with a ribbon cutting celebration scheduled for 10AM for the new Snowdon 6 pack bubble chair and Bear Mountain, with Skye Peak Express is also scheduled for operation .
Winter has returned bringing accumulating snow tonight. Wednesday was springlike with warm temperatures, soft snow and a few glimpses of the sun late in the day. Thursday was a transition day where temperatures had turned colder and snow guns were on up high. Today was similar to yesterday with the addition of a snowstorm at the end of the day. Maybe tomorrow will be a powder day? The forecast is for a few inches of snow overnight, so that should provide good snow surfaces on all open terrain. The weather may be a bit variable tomorrow, but it looks like a pretty good stretch of cold next week.
Happy Halloween! Awesome day skiing today. Started off on the Downdraft headwall which was smooth and soft. So good that some people hiked back up to ski it again. Warmer temperatures made all the skiing great and the visibility was equally good except for one passing shower. It looks like we have a few more warm days forecasted where you may want your goretex clothing handy. The sun is forecasted to return sometime over the weekend. I did hear from a few people that have skied multiple days already this season that today they thought was the best. Sorry no pictures today. Lynda
I didn’t get out to ski until late today, hoping the clouds would lift – which they did a little bit, revealing some sun in the valleys. The temperature at the top was 25 degrees. Killington had made plenty of snow over night, so the skiing was good midwinter conditions and the guns were cranking on Upper Great Northern and of course, Superstar. It was enjoyable to ski nice snow down to the North Ridge Chair. I took advantage of having 3 trails to choose from at the top of North Ridge Chair – Upper Rime, Reason and Upper Double Dipper, which all skied well. It looks like the weather will warm up tomorrow, making for some good skiing the early part of the day, if not all day. Hopefully cold weather will return soon. See you out there!
Killington Bike Report , The mountain bike trails at Snowshed are fun to ride. The Basin crew headed out on Wednesday to take a few runs and also to participate in the weekly bike bum race (new this summer). Our team riders are Christine (my daughter), Dave, Chris, Lorraine and Michael. I scored some big points for our team (even though I went really slow) because I am in the over 60 women’s category. The Adventure Center also at Snowshed has a beast mountain coaster, motorized mountain tours, roaring brook mining, scenic lift rides, skye ropes course, a terra-maze, skyebounce, a new skyejump, a new skyeline zip. Plenty to keep you busy for awhile. I am sure I didn’t list all of the fun things to do. Also, Killington has a golf course and the K1 gondola is open for mountain biking and scenic rides. The Ramshead lift will be spinning soon with more mountain bike trails. The Basin is open 1 hour before Killington is open and 1 hour after Killington closes. The bike shop (True Wheels) has new bikes for sale and NEW rentals for mountain and road, biking accessories, clothing, helmets and shoes. Our bike service shop is here to make sure your bike is all set for an awesome ride. Sorry no pictures.
